ABSTRACT

Habitat management must be carried out before any direct management of wildlife. At times, management may consist of total habitat protection to keep it suitable for certain kinds of game, for example the browsers. Under other circumstances drastic modification of the habitat, for example by the use of fire, must be effected if wildlife populations are to be maintained (Dassman, 1964). Among wildlife species the vertebrates have complex nutritional requirements and a number of different chemical elements are needed, e.g. calcium and phosphorus which may be obtained naturally from salt licks. Water supply is also of vital importance.
