ABSTRACT
An assessment of the discussions of ancient Israel's origin traditions in the land of Palestine in the context of late 1980s' understanding of the change that the historiography of Israel was experiencing in Europe and America. Text-based reconstructions of this event are confronted with historiographical developments on the social uses of the past, in order to have a more critical understanding of the Exodus and Conquest traditions in the Hebrew Bible.
