ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 takes an in-depth look at news writing and how news stories are used to tell an organization’s story. The chapter provides an overview of news stories, including what makes them newsworthy and what differentiates them from feature stories and news-feature hybrids. It reviews the elements of a news story, including the lede, nut graf, quotes, anecdote/example/facts, an explanation of why readers should care, a preview of what’s to come and a kicker, or ending. A news story published by a daily newspaper is used to illustrate the art of writing ledes. The chapter concludes with an exercise in news writing.
