ABSTRACT

Middle school physical education has evolved as a result of a change in national standards and grade-level outcomes for physical education. The five core standards for physical education state that a physically literate individual can do the following:

Standard 1: demonstrate competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns;

Standard 2: apply knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance;

Standard 3: demonstrate the knowledge and skill to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness;

Standard 4: exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others; and

Standard 5: recognize the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction. (SHAPE America, 2014, p. 12)
