The chapter explores the importance of families and communities in enabling positive outcomes for children. There is a focus upon definitions and meanings associated with family and community, paying close attention to issues of culture, values and diversity. Consideration is given to the role of the practitioner in building supportive partnerships with parents and communities, using strength-based approaches to promote resilience. The chapter argues that trust, respect, unconditional positive regard, positive communication and reciprocity are at the heart of joint working with families and the wider community. Pedagogical leadership is essential in order to harness the strengths of families and communities in supporting positive child outcomes. Practice vignettes provide students with examples of effective practice in engaging and enabling families and communities to work in partnership with settings to support children.
