ABSTRACT

The pedagogical leader assists teachers in the process of becoming. In particular, the pedagogical leader has as his or her aim the goal of creating opportunities to foster the development of teachers as human beings who are lifelong learners, researchers, and theorists, who problematise and learn from their practice, understand the dialogical relationship between teaching and research, and teacher and learner, and who continue to critically examine assumptions, beliefs, and practices in their daily encounters with children in classrooms. Rather than ‘effective’ teachers, we should strive to develop ‘reflective’ teacher-leaders, who understand the complexity of teaching, learning, identity, and positionality. This is essential to seeing teaching as an ethical human act of caring, relationship, and inquiry.
