ABSTRACT

The College's inclusion on the BS 5750 register in 1992 is believed by senior managers to be the platform to continue a progressive, controlled, movement into Total Quality Management (TQM). A further negative, attitudinal factor, is the feeling amongst some staff that the achievement of BS 5750 certification was the end of the journey rather than a beginning. With its well-established quality system capable, when events allow, of continuing the journey into TQM, East Birmingham College appears to be set fair. East Birmingham College has been at the forefront of Further Educations acknowledgement of the importance of quality to institutional survival and growth. The distinctive version of quality abroad at East Birmingham College is founded on looking outwards to the community as a way of shaping relationships and philosophies internally and is more to do with addressing inequality than inefficiency and is more about laughing and loving than crying.
