ABSTRACT

Studies in quality management confirm the merits of pursuing a focused and in-depth approach to performance monitoring and evaluation based on agreement as to the priorities for quality improvement. Improvement plans should, in turn, identify 'critical processes', the key activities which must be successfully undertaken to achieve the objectives set. Improvement plans may include changes to agreed objectives, the setting of new performance targets or simply revised systems for achieving the objectives/standards set. At the De Montfort University, a framework for operationalizing these principles has been established through redefined protocols for the validation and ongoing review of taught courses of study. Within the De Montfort University, it was recognized from the outset that the implementation of the course log would be an evolutionary process, and in terms of the acknowledged need for changes in infrastructure support for course monitoring and evaluation.
