ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on an interview with the initiator and principal artist of the acclaimed Chinese art project Folk Memory Project (FMP). In recent years, FMP has been conducting workshops outside China with international participants. The interview targets African Memory: Crossing, a theatre show developed from their workshop in Cagliari, Italy, with over 20 young African refugees. In comparison with their former works concerning Chinese memories, this interview questions how FMP discovered a new dramaturgy to deal with unfamiliar and diverse languages and how they excavated profound folk memories despite cultural differences.
