ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to contribute to this discussion on urban livelihoods by describing, examining and analysing the livelihood strategies and activities of households situated in Budiriro. It discusses the methods used to collect data in Budiriro and the characteristics of the Budiriro households sampled for the study. The chapter examines the activities and strategies of these low-income Budiriro households in making a living and the challenges they face in doing so. It provides policy implications arising from the study. The chapter also provides an in-depth analysis of the ways in which households in Budiriro are making a living within a challenging context dominated by market and state failures. It is evident that households in Budiriro are engaged in various livelihood activities within the realms of, for example, formal and informal employment, agriculture and livestock rearing. The chapter employes a random sampling strategy that minimised bias in neighbourhood and household selection.
