ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of ethical tools for decision-making and will present such a tool. It discusses what opportunities and challenges there are for further developing and introducing such tools for the practice of decision-making in the context of environment and health. In the context of public and environment and health, resources are scarce, and thus one has to also consider opportunity costs of actions. "Honesty" is the last principle for discussion within the development of an ethical toolbox in the form of an "aide memoire" for the context of environment and health. The concept of an "ethical tool" seems promising. An ethical tool can make it easier for persons to address and solve a decision conflict and support open discussion. Ethical tools are seen to be decision aids and starting points for justifications of actions or inactions — they are not to be confused with world formulas or easy to use algorithms.
