ABSTRACT

Along with a greater number of corporate responsibility coalitions, there are many more other players reinforcing the messages of, but also now offering alternative services to, these coalitions. Government support for corporate responsibility at the national level varies widely among different countries. Government support for promoting more responsible and sustainable business practices at the regional and global level of intergovernmental institutions also varies widely, and is growing in both scope and scale. In addition to the UN Global Compact, numerous United Nations programs, funds and specialized agencies now have initiatives dedicated to spreading responsible business standards or partnering with companies to solve global challenges. Some of the multi-sector initiatives have been started by governments or international institutions; some by non-governmental organizations (NGOs); and some are the product of dialogues between (NGOs) and business. A few, such as the Sustainability Consortium, have been initiated by individual companies.
