ABSTRACT

The need for collective business action and more large-scale systemic collaboration between business, government and civil society is more urgent now than ever. The system of market-based capitalism within a framework of good governance and an active civil society has been one of the greatest inventions of humankind. Creating, building and sustaining business-led corporate responsibility coalitions are neither easy nor quick tasks to undertake. They take long-term commitment and persistence on the part of individual champions and companies. They require supportive governments, inter-governmental institutions, foundations and non-governmental and academic organizations. They need outstanding leadership from the men and women in the coalitions themselves; both the ability to envision and articulate a different future for capitalism and the role of business in society, and the ability to mobilize their staff, their member companies and their other partners to execute and deliver on this vision. Business-led corporate responsibility coalitions have a vital role to play in helping to achieve the progress.
