ABSTRACT

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a chief executive officer (CEO)-led organization of forward-thinking companies that galvanizes the global business community to create a sustainable future for business, society and the environment. From its starting point in 1992, the Council has created respected thought leadership on business and sustainability. In a 2012 publication about its regional network, the WBCSD outlined what it describes as three phases of its development: the first Rio decade: from Rio to Johannesburg; the second Rio decade: from Johannesburg to Rio+20; and the third Rio decade: from Rio+20 and beyond. These three stages offer a useful framework for the WBCSD's own phases of development. The chapter provides sets of activities that illustrate some of the ways the WBCSD has delivered on its vision and continues to build its engagement with business and other sectors to meet evolving member needs and to respond to and influence an evolving global agenda.
