ABSTRACT

The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. The UNGC claim to have had a significant impact in helping companies around the world to embed and spread responsible business practices and in building platforms for collective action between business, governments, intergovernmental agencies and civil-society organizations to support global development goals. The UNGC has produced a wide range of publications explaining the issues behind the ten principles, making the business case for engagement, providing practical examples of what companies can do to put the principles into practice, and giving guidance on good practice. The UNGC has played a role in helping to achieve greater scale at an industry-wide or issue level through the creation of a number of dedicated leadership platforms.
