ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors briefly discuss the state of the Australian fashion industry, the local and global context of ethical and sustainable fashion, and introduce Ethical Clothing Australia. A case is made for redefining 'Made in Australia' to be characterised by innovation in ethical and sustainable production of textiles, clothing and footwear (TCF). The authors believe this may provide the sector with a competitive advantage and assists it to grow domestic market share, find more success in export markets, and become a thriving manufacturing sector. While the opportunity for an 'ethical and green' fashion industry may exist, the Australian TCF sector faces a number of challenges which directly influence their ability to implement ethical and sustainable practices into their sourcing, manufacturing and production processes. Australia is known for its natural environment, outdoor lifestyle and the national character of openness and a 'fair go' for everyone.
