ABSTRACT

E. F. Schumacher was a champion of the Green Economy. He advocated smallness because it was compatible with greenness. Giant factories engaged in mass production and giant corporations engaged in mass transportation naturally lead to the pollution of land, air and water, depletion of resources and destruction of human creativity. That is why Schumacher came to the conclusion that small is not only beautiful; it is also necessary and essential even if it is not enough or sufficient. Small is necessary because it provides a potential for people to be spontaneous, creative, flexible and innovative. At a smaller scale we are much better disposed to exercise a greater degree of autonomy and to improve existing plans and rules according to changing circumstances. Moreover we are better able to care for our environment. In 1962 Rachel Carson had presented a scientific case for a greater understanding and care of the natural environment.
