ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Bulgaria profiles, including key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. In Bulgaria, there is a widely shared belief in the importance of serving society and the community. The philanthropic movement grew even stronger after the liberation of Bulgaria from the rule of the Ottomans in 1878. Whatever the causes, most businesses in Bulgaria are yet to see CSR as part of a complex and multidimensional business strategy requiring management systems and clear indicators, rather than as a set of one-dimensional approaches that are a mere 'add-on' to the business. Adherence to international standards in CSR is a priority for Bulgarian businesses. Generally, CSR tends to be left out of long-term business strategy by Bulgarian businesses. There seems to be no clear concept of CSR and no integral CSR policies.
