ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Canada profiles, including key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Canada is a recognised world leader in corporate social and environmental responsibility. This leadership is influenced by the country's geography, political history and international relations. Progressive government legislation and engaged stakeholder groups have been the driving forces in motivating CSR action in Canada. Canada has the world's longest coastline and has been home to a diverse range of fishing opportunities for industry and tourism on the Atlantic, Pacific and inland. Although CSR is not yet integrated into all Canadian corporations and full transparency is limited to a few sectors, responsible business practices in Canada are growing. Canada has the third largest area of forest cover following Russia and Brazil. According to the World Conservation Monitoring Centre, Canada has some 766 known species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
