ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Ghana profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Literature on CSR in Ghana is evolving as research attempts are being made to understand the nature and form of CSR in Ghana and the entire West African region. Research suggests that in Ghana CSR concepts are played out in the education, health, community development, sports and philanthropic areas. In Ghana efforts are being geared towards the provision of free and compulsory education. The CSR activities of Ghanaian firms have straddled several divides. Ofori also examined the perception, nature, type and extent of CSR activity among firms on the Ghana Stock Exchange. The most CSR work in Ghana by Ofori suggests a high degree of awareness by firms of the rationale for and importance of CSR, as well as an appreciation of the place of CSR in business and society.
