ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Israel profile which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Charity and volunteering are key values in Israeli society. In a survey conducted in 1998 it was found that 72% of the adult Jewish population in Israel contributes to the community with either money or volunteering. CSR in Israel started with a focus on philanthropy and community involvement and this approach still dominates. There has been a separate development of CSR in smaller Israeli companies that supply manufactured or cultivated products to the European and American markets. Israel has over 30 laws that deal with labour and workforce issues, covering such areas as working hours, annual leave, sick pay, minimum wage, severance pay, work safety, workers with disabilities and sexual harassment. There is also special legislation dealing with the employment of foreign workers and with the use of manpower contractors.
