ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Liberia profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Liberia is endowed with gold, diamonds, iron ore, nickel, cobalt, manganese and, it is believed, oil. In the period leading up to the first large investment in Liberia by the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, a large part of Liberia was in dire need of basic social services such as schools, hospitals and roads. Two main factors have helped propel corporate responsibility issues to the forefront of business in Liberia. The first is the legacy of dependency created by years of relying on aid money for socioeconomic development during the civil conflict. Another factor is the relative freedom of advocacy on political, economic and social rights, owing partly to the multiplicity of non-governmental organisations and human rights organisations. The divide between marketing and advertising, and CSR programmes, has grown narrower in Liberia.
