ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Romanian profile which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Romania is the only country in the Balkans whose language is of Latin origin. Between 1948 and 1989, Romania experienced forced industrialisation and followed an import substitution strategy. After the fall of the communist regime in 1989, Romania took the first steps towards a market economy. Important changes took place in Romanian society that generated increasing unemployment, privatisation of Romanian companies, increased inflation and reduced purchasing power for the population. Romania is one of the poorest performers in Europe with respect to protecting the environment. Several laws on environmental protection and ecology have been enacted in Romania. The lack of adequate social welfare is a major issue in Romania, largely due to the scarcity of governmental resources for sustaining a proper social protection policy.
