ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Singapore profiles which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. The history of modern Singapore began when the British East India Company established a trading post on the island of Singapore. Singapore achieved full independence in 1965, with acute problems of unemployment, housing shortage and low living standards. The Singapore Compact was created as a national society with a mission to provide impetus to the CSR movement in Singapore, and had as its founding members the National Trades Union Congress and the Singapore National Employers Federation. Economic growth has consistently been one of the foremost priorities of the Singaporean government. Many companies in Singapore devote significant time and resources to 'giving back to the community'. Community spirit is one of Singapore's shared core values, and provides the context in which philanthropy and volunteerism are encouraged and recognised.
