ABSTRACT

This chapter provides Spanish profile which includes key information about the relevant corporate sustainability and responsibility (CSR) history, country-specific issues, trends, research, education and leading organizations. Spanish business has always internalised diverse responsible actions that might be considered good CSR practices, albeit unconsciously and in an ad hoc way. Spain's history has been shaped by the Anglo-Saxon world, and this is also true for CSR, especially among large transnational companies. As a country committed to sustainable development, the Spanish government is working on a policy for CSR that is shaped by negotiations between civil society, business and workers. One of the main problems facing Spanish industry is fragmentation. The main environmental problems affecting Spain, aggravated by climate change, are the loss of water resources; coastal regression; loss of biological diversity and natural ecosystems; and increases in soil erosion processes, all causing serious impacts on various economic sectors.
