ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case that provides the Babson community's attempt to define successful entrepreneurship. On March 8, 2006, Hugh Connerty was invited to speak at Babson College by a student group, the Babson Entrepreneurial Exchange. There are many characters in the case—among them the Babson community, the Babson faculty that participated in an email forum to discuss Connerty's invitation, the students who created the advertisements for his talk, Hooters and Hugh Connerty himself. This case is derived from actual events and issues involving Babson College and Connerty. He has been associated with a range of entrepreneurial enterprises. Connerty's business interests are in real estate and restaurants. Upon the announcement that Connerty would speak on International Women's Day, and that Babson, with its considerable clout in the world of entrepreneurship, had proclaimed Connerty an example of entrepreneurial genius, several female professors raised concerns.
