ABSTRACT

February saw the launch of the India Partnership Forum, a new initiative to enhance corporate responsibility in promoting human development. In New Delhi, the United Nations (UN) Development Programme Administrator, Mark Malloch Brown, and the Director-General of the Federation of Indian Industry signed an agreement establishing the forum. The UN Secretary-General's office has established an experimental Global Compact Learning Forum at Warwick University's Corporate Citizenship Unit which will focus on the organisational change and learning issues involved in company engagement with the Global Compact. The UN Global Compact also seeks to use the web as a key tool in supporting transparency of signatory companies' pursuance of their several principles. The growing notoriety of the protests against global economic institutions, such as the World Bank, and the World Trade Organisation, has established the issue of globalisation and its governance on the international business agenda, as illustrated by the discussions at January 2001's World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
