ABSTRACT

The development potential arising from new corporate strategies to serve low income markets makes this an area of interest for the corporate responsibility community. Corporate sustainability reporting was another area in which several market developments and a fresh batch of research converged over the last quarter of 2004. 2004 witnessed more corporate activity being framed within the context of promoting international development. This is increasingly being discussed as the way in which business can support the Millennium Development Goals. During October 2004, ExxonMobil was successful in obtaining a court-ordered ban on Greenpeace staging protests against the company anywhere in the United States for seven years. In December 2004, the World Resources Institute held a conference in San Francisco, titled 'Eradicating Poverty through Profit: Making Business Work for the Poor'. The last quarter of 2004 saw climate change hit the headlines, owing to its growing influence on politics and economics.
