ABSTRACT

Solidaridad is a Dutch development organization striving for poverty alleviation in developing countries. The organization enables sustainable production and marketing of commodities such as coffee, fruit, soy, and biomass. The fashion program's objective is the improvement of the position of the most vulnerable links in the fashion production chain in developing countries. Codes of conduct (whether certification, monitoring, or verification systems) form an essential part of the Solidaridad/MADE-BY program. The principle of several systems with different levels of ambition is described in the "Pyramid of Change" of Solidaridad. Within the Solidaridad Fashion program, when support on certification is given, the aim is to improve working conditions and facilitate market access to new markets requiring such certifications. Launched at the end of 2004 by Solidaridad, MADE-BY is an umbrella label for fashion brands working on sustainability. MADE-BY's mission is to increase the demand for sustainably produced fashion. Supply-chain management is a key aspect of the sustainability of the brand's production chain.
