ABSTRACT

Sustainable organizations appreciate the value of operating in ways that ensure their capability to achieve enterprise goals and simultaneously increase long-term shareholder value by integrating economic, environmental, and social opportunities into their strategies. In the words of one senior executive, creating a business culture that embraces sustainable development values may well require "fundamental changes in organizational DNA" on a global basis. A global survey reports several findings relevant to managing the change to sustainable enterprise. Respondents believe that sustainable enterprise values are more important to them personally than they are to the company for which they work. Creating cultures that embrace sustainable business practices, and are based on seeing the organization as if it were a living system, grows progressively more important to long-term success in all types of organization. An integrated approach for managing the change to sustainable development cultures can be created by merging the Fair model, participative change management, and traditional project management methodologies.
