ABSTRACT

The need for system innovations towards sustainability has frequently been underlined in policy as well as in scientific debates. Different approaches and inroads have been suggested for how to guide long-term transformation processes of sociotechnical systems in line with the principles of sustainable development. In this chapter we aim to draw together some of our recent experiences with attempts to capture such processes conceptually and to tackle them by means of policy, with the emphasis being put on the role of research, technology and innovation (RTI) policy.
