ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how Biosoil established the knowledge of sustainability (KoS) necessary for sustainable innovation in the soil remediation industry. Soil is a vital environmental medium, but it has not always been treated with sufficient care. Biosoil's core activity is developing, designing and carrying out biological in situ soil remediation. The company's aim is to remediate soil contamination by stimulating and optimising the natural biological degradation of soil contamination by, for example, readjusting soil conditions. The case of the former gas plant in Oud Beijerland demonstrates how environmental aspects can play a role in the decision-making process in a soil remediation project. Biosoil initiated contact with the National Institute for Sustainable Development programme Knowledge Creation for Sustainable Innovation. The guidelines mentioned above regarding KoS in the soil remediation industry serve as important preconditions to continuously stimulate organisations such as Biosoil to practise sustainable innovation.
