ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the Optichem Infonet project—an innovation in paper production in the Netherlands. The project introduces decision-support software (DSS) to interconnect the different knowledge domains that lie at the heart of paper production. Since the 1960s, sustainability has been an important issue for paper production in the Netherlands. Due to a lack of raw materials and increasing demand for paper, the paper industry needed to search for more sustainable methods and materials. The goal of the DSS is to improve the personal safety of employees executing a variety of tasks in paper production by reducing the knowledge gap between the chemical domain and other knowledge domains that are used in their tasks. Improving the sustainability of the paper industry is highly complex because of the number of parties involved in paper production and the multiplicity of knowledge domains that need to come together.
