ABSTRACT

Truly sustainable future mobility implies much less material per transport or personkilometre, and totally sustainable sources for all energy use. This would be combined with a dramatic reduction in the use of energy in mobility generally. Energy would be used primarily to move people rather than vehicles, thus creating a need for safe lightweight vehicles. Nuclear fission was discussed, but in view of its legacy of waste was not considered sustainable despite its advantages in terms of lack of carbon dioxide emissions. It is encouraging to see proposals for change coming from Finland to India, to see the forward thinking in business and industry of all sizes and to see attempts made by academia of many disciplines worldwide to build the bridge to a more sustainable model, both from a conceptual, social science, to a practical engineering and industrial design point of view.
