ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the main elements of the Department's environmental management system (EMS) and examines the benefits and challenges of its adoption. The Environmental Services Department of Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos, was established from the first day of the company's formation in June 1996. However, in 1998 the project plan team, which consisted of external consultants, suggested the development of an EMS compatible with International Organisation for Standardisation 14001, which should fulfil all the system requirements of Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. The designated representatives of each activity sector were responsible for proper EMS implementation in their particular sector. The internal review process of the EMS is based on a number of committees and processes, which ensure that the EMS is implemented effectively. EMS progress is closely monitored during the monthly EMS committee in which all personnel responsible for activity sectors or EMPs participate.
