ABSTRACT
Environmentally responsible manufacturing (ERM) is a major management initiative that has built on numerous other organisational programmes. ERM and its implementation through a specific environmental management system is a valid issue to study for a number of reasons. Like quality management, ERM is the subject of an International Organisation for Standardisation standard that provides a framework for environmental management systems. R. D. Klassen measured management orientation or values and found them to be strongly associated with environmental performance. This chapter provides a framework for testing the relationship between quality and environmental management systems while considering common practices, specific environmental practices and top-management support. It presents the importance of the framework and the relationships within it from a review of the relevant literature. The literature review provides the foundation for several propositions that can be tested using the data available.
