ABSTRACT

The integration of developing countries into the global economy and addressing development needs were central objectives of the new round of multilateral trade negotiations in the WTO. Part of a potential package for technical assistance and capacity-building in the trade and environment area is the Sustainable Trade and Innovation Centre (STIC),1 a market-driven initiative launched in Johannesburg. Promoted jointly by developing and developed countries, its main beneficiaries would be local sustainable enterprises. A feasibility study has been conducted under the guidance of an international advisory board headed by Minister Ngubane of South Africa and supported by the EU and the Commonwealth Science Council. The Centre’s objective is to facilitate exports of sustainable goods and services from developing countries to OECD countries. Sectors of primary focus are textiles, agri-food and electronics.
