ABSTRACT

The recent United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development (UN WSSD) held in Johannesburg brought forward a plan of implementation intended to set the world’s environmental agenda for the next ten years. It will generate many activities and partnerships on the global, regional and national level to implement the activities needed to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns. Decoupling environmental degradation and economic growth was among the key objectives discussed. Concepts such as cleaner production, ecoefficiency and functionality can contribute to that broad goal.
