ABSTRACT

Unions and groups such as the National Consumers' League and the Lawyers' Committee for Human Rights were involved along with academia. A mammoth media corporation and a small, human rights non-governmental organisation (NGO) formed a partnership to create recordings by pop music stars that would be paired with curricula to teach children about human rights. Initiation of a partnership entails including stakeholders that can bring relevant competences to bear on the task at hand, create credibility for the partnership process and communicate with the public at large. People, more than any other aspect of NGO–business partnerships, will influence the chances of success. Foron's demise illustrates the need for partners to engage in long-range strategic planning, as well as clearly state the desired length of their participation in a partnership from the outset of the Long–Arnold partnership life-cycle. The initiation phase of the Long–Arnold matrix of the partnership life-cycle includes three categories: people, goals and capacity building.
