ABSTRACT

In 2000, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) awarded a contract to Battelle Memorial Institute as the lead research organisation on a project entitled 'Towards a Sustainable Cement Industry'. The project was sponsored by ten of the world's leading cement companies drawn together by the WBCSD for this project as the Working Group Cement. The purpose of the project was to provide a vision and roadmap for the cement industry to help it move towards long-term sustainability. The stakeholder engagement research from the Sustainable Cement project sought to provide a framework and tools for the industry to inform and engage external stake-holders across geographies, communities and interest groups. Mutual responsibility by the cement industry and its stakeholders can be used to further sustainable development. A continuous communications programme is critical to monitor changes and shifts in society and resulting stakeholder perceptions so that business priorities and strategies can be adjusted accordingly.
