ABSTRACT

The chapters in this book have identified, described and evaluated the continuous, international political process that emerged from the preparations for the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE) in Stockholm, thereafter continuing to and through the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro and, most recently, to the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg. The main theme of this book has been the development of an international political process on the environment and development since the early 1970s, of which these three conferences represent important stages and building blocks. All three produced important results that have contributed to shaping the norms governing social, environmental and economic development around the world.
