ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the opportunities for adapting the interpretation of as well as making feasible changes to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreements and identifies specifically to counteract the undesirable developments. Proposals have been made independent of industrial sector and would affect large areas of world trade. The agricultural sector requires special treatment because it differs substantially from other sectors. The chapter deals with the question: 'Which parts of the Agreement on Agriculture are more important for long-term efficient agriculture, and which are less important?' It shows the way in which free trade could be a problem for sustainability. The chapter investigates whether and how the WTO in its current form hampers the solution of those problems. It outlines the potential room for action in order to improve the situation. The chapter reflects on the importance of the rules and instruments with regard to the some objectives.
