ABSTRACT

In Japan in 1996, the Keidanren (Japan Federation of Economic Organisations) announced voluntary action by Japanese industry directed at conservation of the global environment in the 21st century. The Keidanren was established in 1946 and now represents more than 1,000 Japanese industrial groups. The organisation plays an essential role in developing a consensus within the industrial community on important questions, and the following 1997 paper illustrates the close working relationships that are the rule within the structure of Japanese society. Then Chairman of the Committee on Environment and Safety of the Keidanren, Yoshifumi Tsuji (also at the time Chairman of the Nissan Motor Co. Ltd) came to Paris to present the Keidanren’s statement regarding voluntary action. Yoshifumi Tsuji is now a Vice Chairman of the Keidanren and a Counsellor at Nissan.
