ABSTRACT
Today, we, like many national environmental agencies, seek to encourage rather than penalise, and thus we are moving toward voluntary measures. Most enterprises, and we are particularly interested in the small and medium-sized businesses now, have at least heard of the site-based approach to environmental management, whether it be eco-auditing or ISO 14001 certification. A product-based approach, on the other hand, takes us outside the company through an examination of all phases of a product’s life-cycle, both before and after the manufacturing process. This approach, while still rare, is the most likely to involve the final consumer in the environmental protection process.
