ABSTRACT

The power of the press to ignore or draw attention to issues cannot be overestimated. The environment, beginning around Earth Day in the 1970s, became a hot subject, but in the 1990s it was dropped for a period of time, perhaps because it wasn’t novel, perhaps because it was boring, or because it was too apocalyptic. In 1999, the subject began to reappear in the major press, perhaps to coincide with the millennium, perhaps because there are genuine changes afoot, which makes the subject new again. 25
