Environmental activism in relation to industry has a long history, but the varieties are proliferating. The following article describing a kind of tense co-operation between environmentalists and the Dow Chemical Company appeared first in the New York Times and then in the International Herald Tribune on 19 July 1999. It is reprinted here with permission. This sort of industry–environment story is increasingly turning up in major newspapers, just as the kind of action described is proliferating.
