ABSTRACT

Ecological sanitation, or ecosan, is more of an approach than a set of technologies. Ecological sanitation is a potential solution for all societies and all economic levels. In Sweden and Germany, the systems that are being developed are sophisticated, many using in-house ceramic ware and pipes that can be as costly as those required for conventional systems. To qualify as ecosan, the system must prevent spread of disease, prevent groundwater pollution, recycle nutrients and, importantly for many parts of the world, save water. With the exception of a few sites, the environment had the capacity to handle the relatively low level of discharge from sewer systems into large bodies of water. The main motivations for Mexicans to adopt ecological toilets are limited water availability and non-functional or non-existent sewage treatment. The ArborLoo is a soil–composting toilet that does not require high temperatures.
