ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the whole essence of the business environmental agenda and how it is being influenced by the expectations and demands of large organisations. Robert M. Monczka notes that, even after a decade of existence: Supply chain management continues to be a poorly understood, badly explained and wretchedly implemented concept. Historically, businesses in the supply chain have operated relatively independently of one another to create value for an ultimate customer and profits for themselves. The experience of B&Q suggests that supply chain pressure is being exerted some distance down the line, and this 'distance' needs to be checked with this research approach. According to Monczka, perhaps the most significant enabler of supply chain management is information system technology, an area of recent and rapid change for many global companies. T. Andel concludes that the goals in setting up information supply chain should be rooted in the following elements: operation strategy, performance measurement, information, and systems.
