ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some aspects of interrelationships between SMEs with regard to raising the awareness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) to their legal responsibilities. It addresses the key needs of the various factors involved in bringing about compliance. The Environment Agency is committed to addressing the needs of SMEs and is currently working towards developing a national strategy to bring more consistency to this area of its work. The chapter explains the model to include the awareness-raising information that is produced by regulators and environmental help organisations. The main philosophy behind such a journey is that businesses will realise that good environmental management is exactly the same as good business practice. SME managers than, for example, finance. Environmental issues are accepted by SMEs as just another aspect of business efficiency, it may be said that the journey towards continuous improvement has truly begun.
