ABSTRACT

Unox's production process is concentrated in three factories: the meat products, soup, and sauce operations. By comparing Environmental Policy Indicator scores from year to year, Unox can demonstrate continual improvement. The environmental policy of the Dutch government is embodied in the National Environmental Policy Plans (NEPP). The key principle of the NEPP is an environmental policy that aims for sustainable development. Indicators must lead to the quantification and simplification of environmental issues; they allow comparison between environmental categories and facilitate communication of environmental performance when used as an environmental management tool. Indicators are defined on the basis of 'intra-weighting' and 'inter-weigh ting'. Energy and water use, the company's emissions and transport can all be converted, via intra-weighting, into environmental category scores. Since different environmental categories can be compared using inter-weighting, it is possible to demonstrate the effect of environmental damage per project. It is possible to use the model as a tool for choosing between different environmental impact-reducing techniques.
